After helping weed out calls from unknown and spam numbers, Truecaller now wants to do the same for SMS. The Swedish company today launched ‘Truemessenger’, which essentially aims at making SMS smarter and less spammy.
Truemessenger’s functionality is quite similar to how Truecaller works. So in essence it identifies the person who has sent you a text from an unknown number. Similarly, the service also taps into its spam database to weed out messages from numbers that have been identified as a nuisance by other users. You can similarly help out others by tagging a number as spam. Spam messages are all collected in a separate folder, which helps in avoiding clutter.
Truemessenger is currently only available in India, and will soon expand to other countries. It has also only launched on the Android platform, no doubt, because of the openness of the platform. You can head over to the Google Play Store to download the app for free.
At the launch event today, Truecaller revealed that it boasts a userbase of around 150 million activated users. Of this, around 80 million are based out of India. Going forward, it aims to reach the 120 million mark in the country.
